French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity of France, with Papeete as its capital. It covers a land area of 3,251 km², while its Exclusive Economic Zone extends across an impressive 5,500,000 km² of the South Pacific.

Geographically, it lies far from major cities: 4,100 km from Auckland, 4,400 km from Honolulu, and 15,700 km from Paris.

The main languages spoken are French and various vernacular Polynesian languages. The local currency is the Pacific Franc (CFP Franc, ISO code XPF), with 1,000 XPF equal to approximately 8.38 euros.

In terms of development, French Polynesia ranked 75th on the Human Development Index in 2010.
