New Caledonia is an overseas collectivity of France with a special status, and its capital is Nouméa. The territory covers 18,576 km² in the South Pacific, located about 1,500 km from Australia, 1,800 km from New Zealand, and 17,000 km from Paris.

The main languages spoken are French and various Kanak languages.

Its currency is the CFP franc (F CFP, ISO code XPF), with 1,000 F CFP equal to €8.38.

National representation includes two Members of Parliament, two Senators, and two representatives on the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, while the French State is represented locally by the High Commissioner of the Republic. New Caledonia’s territorial institutions include the Congress of New Caledonia, the Government, the Customary Senate, and its own Economic, Social and Environmental Council.
