Wallis-and-Futuna : economic overview

Wallis and Futuna, is an overseas collectivity of France with a special status, and its capital is Mata’Utu. The territory covers a land area of 142 km² in the South Pacific, located about 16,000 km from Paris, 780 km from Suva, and 2,500 km from Nouméa.

The main languages spoken are French, Wallisian, and Futunan. Its currency is the Pacific Franc (CFP Franc, XPF), with 1,000 XPF equal to €8.38.

Wallis and Futuna ranked 53rd on the Human Development Index in 2010.

National representation includes one Member of Parliament, one Senator, and one representative on the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, while the French State is represented locally by a Prefect, who serves as the Senior Administrator of the Territory.
